What Causes Bruised Left Wrist With Numbness Of Thumb After IV Injection?

Question: I had a day surgery 3 days ago. While preparing for surgery, the nurse was giving me IV. Instead of putting the line to my arm, she insisted on putting the needle into the base of my left thumb to find the vain. She could not find it, instead it stabbed on something that caused extreme pain. Today, the inside of my left wrist is bruised with mild numbness on my thumb and fingers and the arm. When I accidentally touched the place where the needle was inserted, it caused a brief but extreme sharp stabbing pain and also felt as if been electrocuted for a brief second. I felt that the needle stabbed on a nerve.
My question: how serious is it? Will it heal by itself? How long will it take to heal? Should I go see my PCP to discuss it?

Brief Answer:
The injury is mild.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for posting your query.
I have noted the details of the procedure and the symptoms after that.
I agree with you that the symptoms are most likely due to injury to the nerve by the needle. Generally, these injuries are not severe and heal on their own in a few days to a few weeks.
There are no specific medicines to accelerate the healing.
If the uncomfortable symptoms such as tingling, burning, shock like sensation, etc become troublesome, you may take pregabalin capsules to reduce them.
There is no need to meet your PCP at this point of time.
I hope it helps.
