What Causes Burning Feeling And Pain While Urinating?
Question: had external radiation for prostate 2 years ago. been having pain and burning when urinating most of the time. And a weaker stream. Last week had had trouble urinating so I went to my Urologist. He scanned by bladder and said I was retain to much urine. I had a catheter for 5 days and took cipro and doubled up on flomax. . after 5 days when the catheter cameI had been suffering for monthe=s out all the pain and burning was gone and urine flow was again normal. The urine coulture showed no infection. He said to go back to 1 flomax daily .I had been suffering for months and informed him and he said it was from the radiation and nothing could be none unless i was bleeding or could not urinate. I asked for the scope test but he said I did not need it., I feel when I take two flomax daily it helps.. I am so relived that the pain and burning is gone. . I am thinking that the cathiter steched out my ureatha and made it esier for me to urinate. my concern is that it will come back again. Any sujestions as to what can be done to prevent it from happening again/

You are right. The catheter which has been inserted during the recent period has definitely has opened up the passage for passing urine now. That is the reason you are now free of your symptoms now. But it has the tendency to recur - depends upon person to person the duration of recurrence differ.
Many a times the recurrence of such episodes cannot be prevented; but it is advised to void urine every 2-3 hours.
Before answering in detail I would like to know
- Have you undergone any surgery for benign prostatic hypertrophy? if so when?
The treatment for benign prostatic hypertrophy is different from prostatc cancer. In early stages the best treatment for prostatic cancer and benign prostatic hypertrophy is trans urethral resection of prostate. In later stage of prostatic cancer, the treatment is radiation followed by chemotherapy.
The aim of all these treatment is to make the residual urine to minimum and free passage of urine.
Urinary catheter is introduced to void the urine and dilate the urinary passage so that you will get relieved from your symptoms. In all these situations you will be constantly treated for underlying urinary tract infection as it will worsen the condition.

If the prostate size is small and your PSA is 0.1 you may not need further radiation and hope fully you are alright after the urinary catheter withdrawal.
You can continue flomax or tamsulosin which is a alpha 1 adrenergic blocker which acts on the prostate to reduce its size.
If I were your treating physician i will definitely reduce your tablet flomax dosage now ,as you are improving. Any way consult with your urologist for a second opinion.
