What Causes Burning Feeling Under Rib Cage And Left Arm?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Feb 2015
Question: Hi, I have been given omeprazole for reflux a week ago and that has cleared, but I still have an ache, like a pressing burning feeling under my left rib and to the side by the lowest rib. Almost like winded or muscle ache. Painkillers for two days but it's still there. My GP felt my abdomen and said he couldn't feel anything and my lungs seem clear and to go away and take painkillers. I am suffering so badly with anxiety over this, I'm so scared of what it could be. My top of my left arm has the same feeling. My bowels are all over the place too, although normal colour, a bit constipated. Please help:(

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
thanks for sending the question.

I would be suspicious that the symptoms that you are experiencing might be related to a small area of irritation in the stomach. This is sometimes referred to as an ulcer.

Other considerations include constipation which can cause pain and cramping in different areas of the abdomen.

I would focus on maintaining good hydration and a well-balanced diet. Continue the omeprazole as prescribed.

If the symptoms continue or get worse I would recommend you sit down with your doctor again and have him perform a good physical examination to help determine what might be going on.

Sincerely,

Thank you for your reply.
What about the arm pain. Could this be related? Can anxiety cause it. I'm having counselling at the moment because I'm going mad with worry, just crying all the time. Would my Dr have been able to feel any pancreatic or spleen/ liver probs with a physical examination as I am overweight?. If these organs were playing up would I know? You read so much about pancreatic cancer being hard to detect it is scaring me.

Detailed Answer:
it's remotely possible that arm pain could be related. This seems unlikely however. It might be just musculoskeletal pain.

Your Dr. Canfield the spleen when he examines you if it is enlarged.

Pancreatic cancer again would be extremely rare but I understand why you are worried. Your doctor can follow up on a lot of these concerns with a good physical exam and maybe some laboratory tests.

Anxiety can contribute to a lot of this if not all of the symptoms.
