What Causes Burning Pain And Tender Spot On Penis After Hernia Surgery?

Non smoker
Very active and generally healthy
End of November had open right inguinal hernia surgery. Was in some pain before surgery, burning type.
In a lot of pain after surgery, and have a high tolerance for pain
Last visit to the surgeon was mid January and he said give it till spring to see if it goes away
It's a burning/numbness and one very tender spot above base of penis and to the right
Currently working away from home for a few months and wondering if I should make an appt, and what the cause might be? Could hernia not have been the cause of the pain in the first place
Would rather not have to do the pain clinic solution
Currently not taking any medication
Thanks
Consider assessment for nerve entrapment neuropathy.
Detailed Answer:
Brief Ans-Consider assessment for nerve entrapment neuropathy.
Hi Dear !! Welcome to HCM with your query.
Read and reviewed your query in context to your health concerns of burning/numbness and tender spot above the base of penis and to its right.
My Impression-
Based on the facts, that the post-operative pain was more than the pre-operative burning type of pain with hernia.
Now that pain is still remaining and is added with numbness.
This is mostly-due to the post-operative fibrosis - causing entrapment neuropathy and is due to edema/traction causing irritation/inflammation.
Do's Suggested-
Consult attending Surgeon-to review on cause of this unresolved burning and numbness.
Try following Special Treatment plan-for 2 weeks-
Start with Tab Motrin 400 mg x 3 times a day -for 3-4 days - to reduce edema / inflammation/ congestion - in post-op period.
Tab PPI-Pantoprazole 40 mg once daily before breakfast - to control gastritis(if any) with Motrin
Voltaren (OTC) gel locally
Tab Chymoral forte-1 x 2 time a day x 2 weeks.
Tab Neurontin 300 mg x 2-3 times a day x 1 week
Tab Neruobion- 1 x 2 times a day x 2 weeks.
This should resolve the burning pain/ numbness in 2 weeks time.
Pain at point near base of penis, also should resolve this special drug planning.
Other cause of -Keloid in the hernial wound need to be ruled out
In NO Relief of burning pain-
If this treatment of 2 weeks does not resolve your complaints, then-CT Spine is needed to rule out prolapsed disc at L1/ or any other causes need to be ruled out with Orthopedic Surgeon Consultation.
Comments about your case-
As the burning pain before surgery is added with numbness-
You need to rule out-neural compression due to hidden un-diagnosed prolapsed disc at L-1 spine vertebra level, which may mimic like this.
But before doing CT scan, I would suggest you to rule out post-operative nerve entrapment in fibrosis-which is adding numbness to earlier burning pain.
