What Causes Burning Pain In Middle Of Abdomen Radiating To Ribs?

default
Posted on Fri, 6 Feb 2015
Question: Hi I have been on 40 mg of Omeprazole and 300 mg of ranitidine for several months. For about a week I have had a burning pain from about the middle of my abdomen, right at the bottom of my rib cage and extending to the left, right at the base of my ribs and down to about my navel. I haven't noticed any difference with or without food, no diarrhea or vomiting. It started out feeling like gas, I took gas-ex for 3 days, no relief and it has progressed to the burning pain. I am now taking Gaviscon which slightly reduces the burning for a little while. I have also been belching quite a lot, with or without Gas-ex or Gaviscon

Brief Answer:
GERD worsening or peptic ulcer seem most possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Why have you been taking Omeprasole and Ranitidine?

Your symptoms can be caused by worsening of GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease) which you might have had for some time now (I assume thats the reason you have been taking antiacids) or by some change in the stomach or duodenum. Most probable seems peptic ulcer or stomach inflammation. You may have nausea and lack of appetite with this issues as well.
Pancreas inflammation, gallstones are the conditions which should be considered as well.

I suggest you to consult gastroenterologist. Gastroscopy should be done to see stomach and duodenum condition. This test will also show if there is Helicobacter Pylori infection which may be the factor of all your symptoms.
Abdominal ultrasound, liver tests, pancreas tests should be also checked.

In a meanwhile please try to avoid fatty foods, spicy foods, coffee, chocolate, orange juices, alcohol.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
