What Causes Burning Sensation And Heaviness In Chest Area?

default
Posted on Sat, 2 May 2015
Question: I am currently taking Omerprazole DR 40 mg tab in the morning before breakfast. I started taking Lexapro 10 mg tab last night. After breakfast I started experiencing burning & heaviness in my chest. Could this be from taking both meds? Should I discontinue Omerprazole or is it possible that these systems will decrease after continued use of Lexapro?

Brief Answer:
continue omeprazole, pantoprazole a better option with lexapro

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

You should continue omeprazole, for now, as the symptoms you mentioned are alleviated by omeprazole. A pro kinetic like metoclopramide or domeperidone can be added to control the GERD and dyspepsia effectively. If the heaviness persist despite the medication, you should get an EKG done to rule out any cardiac issue. You can space out both the medication as Lexapro can be taken after the breakfast in the morning. Omeprazole can increase the effect of Lexapro by affecting hepatic enzyme metabolism. Pantoprazole would be a better option with Lexapro as it doesn't have any significant interaction with Lexapro. You may discuss this option with your doctor.

Wishing you best of health

I have Pantoprozole 40 mg tabs. Do you recommend that I try that med instead of Omeprazole? Any problems to expect with stopping Omeprazole?

Brief Answer:
Yes, pantoprazole can be taken instead safely

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Yes you can safely take Pantoprazole instead of omeprazole. There would be no problem expected with switching these medication. However, a preferred alternative would be to go to your doctor and have the changes prescribed based on the discussion above.

Thanks
