What Causes Burning Sensation In Eyes When Suffering From Hashimotos Thyrodistis?
i am a patient of Hashimotos Thyrodistis and on 75 MCG of Levothyroxince since last 7 months. I was diagnosed 17 months ago with this disease.
few weeks ago , i was identified with vitamin D defiency of 25 in blood. I started 5000 IU
of Vitamin D from there and my conditions improved significantly ,and m recent TSH was found 0.74 which was never that low before , even on same dosage before Vitamin D it used to be 3.4 - 3.8 all the time.
I am also taking selenium 350 mcg and also pro biotics and other general multi vitamins.
now the main question.
since last 3 weeks , i was having water coming out from my left eye and red eye with burning sensation. Went to Opthalmologist , he said you use computer too much that why and he gave me MAxitrol Drops and also eye hydrating drops. HE checked my eye pressure , which was at that tme 17.
i had another appointment after a week with Optemetrist for glasses and she confirmed my pressure as 19. Than by curosity i went to another optemetrist yesterday and she confirmed my Eye pressure as 21- 22 . this raised my concerns if
what is going on.
i was confirmed by my Eye doctor twice that there is no sign of Thyroid eye disease and no Glucoma and eyes are infact very good.
i am still having buring sensation in my left eye and very minor distirbuance in eye lid , like it fees that something is not wight.
do you think thyroxine is now being absorbed better in body with vitamin D , thats why thyroxine is being considered overdose and i am getting these side effects and also eye pressure is increased by thyroxine overdose or maxitrol is the culprit.
I also have cold / sinus issue all the time and currently going through it.
I used maxitrol for 8 days 4 times a day for a week ( 2 weeks ago ) and eye pressure of 21 was identified yesterday.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Good day.
It seems that you have auto immune hypothyroidism ( hashimoto's) and have vitamin D insufficiency. Taking Vitamin D will not have any effect on thyroxine absorption. However,on the opposite, hypothyroidism will impair absorption of many drugs and once hypothyroidism is corrected, stomach absorption of nutrients and drugs become better. The TSH of 0.7 is not too low and is with in normal limits only. You don't have to reduce the dose of thyroxine.
It is unclear if you are having a thyroid eye disease or a glaucoma or a completely different problem. Both can start in single eye too. Hyperthyroidism ( grave's disease) is commonly associated with thyroid eye disease, however, we have also seen this in auto immune hypothyroidism. The best thing to do is to meet a specialist in thyroid eye disease ( some ophthalmologists specialize in this) instead of meeting optometrists. They can rule out this and can guide you properly
By the way, could you attach a copy of last Thyroid function tests?

I did talk to ine opthalmologist and he said that vitamin d might have imprived absorption in your body and that could be 1 reason u might need lesss thyroxin now and this is reaction of overdose .
Also my tsh of 0.70 only came down and tested after 7 days of vitamin d of 5000iu and now its mor than 6 weeks i am taking it so may be my tsh has gone down now.
On the orher nite i have lost weight and also having depression as well .
Do u think maxitrol eye drops could have raised eye pressure by use of 8 days 2 weeks ago .
Teally dont k ow what to do. Can i give u a call and discuss this matter if possible and i will pay for your consultation ??

Hello
Good day.
Vitamin d doesn't improve absorption as I mentioned before. And let me tell you that TSH of 0.7 is normal. If you are in doubt we can recheck your TSH once again.
Regarding your eye, a visual inspection is important and I am unable to identify the problem with out seeing it. I don't personally think the eye drops created the problem but as it is beyond my specialty, you may better seek opinion from an ophthalmologist itself. Unfortunately we are not supposed to reveal phone numbers.sorry for that.
