Question : Hi I went to see my doc after experiencing burning when urinating and foul smelling Urine. have been put on Alprim and after two days my burning has decreased while urinating but my urine still has the foul smell plus experiencing a little discomfort between the scrotum and rectum - Im thinking its my prostate? I have been reading up and UTI can cause prostatitis - is this a normal symptom to get while on Alprim ?

Urinary tract infection can involve any aspect of the urinary tract. In men this would include the prostate. It is possible to have infection of one or all of the different aspects of the urinary tract- urethra, ureter, bladder, kidneys, prostate
The symptoms of discomfort that you are experiencing are not related to your antibiotic but are part of the infection.
It is possible for an infection involving other aspects of the urinary tract to also involve the prostate, men can also have infection of the prostate without other areas being involved.
Trimetoprim is used to treat some patients with UTI particularly prostatitis , either on its own or in combination with sulfamethoxazole (combination known as bactrim or septra).
Some bacteria are resistant to particular antibiotics but your doctor may have done a urine analysis which showed that the bacteria causing your infection would respond to trimetoprim.
In this case, you should expect to see a continued improvement in the next 24 to 48 hours.
If the bacteria is resistant and your symptoms do not continue to improve then your doctor may consider a repeat urine analysis and a change in antibiotics

Hi - thanks for the answer also experiencing some lower abdominal / back pain ATM - started about 2 hours ago - should I ring my doctor or is this a side effect ? Should I wait another hour until I have another alprim?
