Posted on Tue, 17 May 2016
Question: I have been feeling unwell for several days. Off my food, feeling sick like I need to burp all the time. I have also been sneezing although I don't have a cold and the flem is going down my throat. Sometimes I feel I am getting better than it comes back . Also a slight cough which then starts my sneezing. Haven't eaten much over the last few days. Today I had a better meal but now I feel back to what I was feeling. It is not enough to go to bed but I just feel so sick all the time.

Brief Answer:
common cold or allergic rhinitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

the symptoms you've described can be attributed to either common cold or allergic rhinitis. Sometimes it's not easy for the doctor to distinguish between them. The common cold usually also causes fatigue, throat discomfort or soreness, headache but not too intense, chills, etc. Allergic rhinitis can be accompanied by eye symptoms like itchiness and redness and it usually occurs at about the same time each year and lasts for longer than the common cold. The antihistamines are supposed to improve the symptoms of both diseases but in a more direct way in allergic rhinitis. In the common cold the antihistamine will only improve the runny nose but won't help with the congestion or the rest of the symptoms.

One important thing when feeling sick is to check your temperature at least twice a day (morning and evening) and whenever you feel chills or rigor (15-20 minutes after the rigor has started).

Regarding treatment, you can continue to use the antihistamine if it doesn't make you feel too tired or drowsy. If your nostrils are stuffed you can use a decongestant for a few days. Clinical examination could provide additional clues, so if a visit to your doctor is feasible, you'd better try it.

Thank you. I will go to my GP in the next few days if it doesn't ease up. I thought it was allergies but then I was wondering if it was a virus going around. Thank you for your help.
