What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Question: Nerve conduction studies demonstrated absent right
upper extremity sensory responses except for the presence of a medial antebrachial sensory
response which was similar to the response on the left. The left median motor amplitude was
reduced with slow conduction velocity however there was a significant crossover which is a normal
variant. No left median sensory response could be obtained. Other studies in the left arm and
right leg were normal.
Concentric needle EMG demonstrated large motor unit potentials
with some reduced recruitment in the right upper trunk innervated muscles and otherwise was
normal.

I'm not finding a question in what you wrote-- Please help

Detailed Answer:
Good afternoon. My name is Dr. Saghafi and I am a neurologist from XXXXXXX OH, USA. Please help me understand your post because it only seems to be an EMG and NCV report with interpretation. What would the question be? If you are looking for possible diagnoses then, you will need to provide some clinical information as to what your symptoms or problems are with the upper extremities.

If you are simply looking for an explanation of the report and you already have been given a diagnosis by your doctor then, that's fine as well but in any event a question would certainly help me further your knowledge down the railroad of knowledge.

Interpreting EMG/NCV results in a vacuum of clinical information is rather difficult and often fraught with imprecision and inaccuracy. What was the study ordered for in the first place any way?

I will say this- the clinical interpretation of ABNORMAL is on the basis of there being absent sensory responses as well as reduced median motor amplitudes, reduced conduction velocities, and large motor unit potentials. Reduced recruitment is a hard thing to interpret by reading a report because unless you are actually observing the patient and seeing how they are responding you can't know whether that reduced recruitment is due to nerve weakness or lack of effort on the patient's part..sometimes that could be due to pain or other obstructive phenonmenon (immobilization of the limb due to a fracture, casting, etc.)

One possible diagnosis among others could be CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME and if I had to go one step further I might also say that the left side seems at least slightly worse than the right side.

I'd appreciate the favor of a HIGH STAR RATING and some written feedback if your question has been satisfactorily answered. Also CLOSING THE QUERY on your end will be most helpful and appreciated so that this transaction can be processed. Don't forget that my webpage to keep me abreast as to how you are doing if you choose or if you ever have any other questions of a medical nature is: bit.ly/drdariushsaghafiAll the Best.

This query has required a total of 23 minutes of physician specific time to read, research, and compile the return envoy to the patient.

Cheers!
