What Causes Cheese Like Vaginal Discharge With Itching And Redness?

default
Posted on Sat, 19 Dec 2015
Question: I have recently had vaginal itching, redness, cottage cheese like discharge, used monistat & it seemed to help. The itching went right away. today was my 3rd dose, now I feel like a I have a small fissure between my vagina and anus. My husband also had a rash (no blisters and no itching) on mainly one side of his penis and scrotum, it went away within a week with clotrimazole (I think that's how its spelled). Could this be a yeast infection that I had given to him or does it sound more like herpes?

Brief Answer:
Clear case of vaginal candidiasis and nothing else ma'am :)

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I would like to start by asking why exactly you feel you have a fissure, have you or your husband examined the region visually and noticed a tear? If so, and if you are comfortable, then please do attach a clear image of the affected region to our discussion or email it to me at:

YYYY@YYYY

and mention 'ATTN: Dr. Shoaib Khan' in the subject line for me.

There are 3 points here which all point towards this being a case of vaginal candidiasis (yeast/fungal infection):

1. Your husband recovered completely with the use of clotrimazole (used to treat fungal infections)

2. You have a cottage cheese like vaginal discharge which is typical for vaginal candidiasis

3. Your symptoms match that of vagainal candidiasis and you also seemed to experience an improvement with monistat

So I do believe you do in fact have vaginal candidiasis and not herpes (for sure). It depends on who had the symptoms first; if you did, then you gave it to him; and if he did, then he gave it to your; either way, it doesn't matter because both of you are partners for life and also this is a mild infection which is nothing serious and can easily be avoided. I shall list a few steps to avoid future recurrences in my next reply okay? :)

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

Thank you, I have been stressing so much as we have been together for 5 years and I have no idea where this came from out of the blue. I commonly have a odd smelling discharge but my dr. has said no trich through my annual pap, neg for gonn and chly as well. Its hard to see but appears that there is a small cut between my vagina and anus. I feel like I have been stressing myself out into signs and symptoms of herpes because I have been googling signs and symptoms too much.
I am currently at work and am unable to upload picture at this time. What is the time frame that this should clear up? If it was herpes would the rash had not cleared up with clotrimazole? Should I follow up with my GYN even if symptoms go away? I work closely with them and am friends with all GYN's in my area that's why I am using this site instead of waiting to just go to the doctor.

Brief Answer:
Do not stress so much ma'am :)

Detailed Answer:
Hi ma'am. :)

Do not worry, your symptoms are nothing like those of herpes, so you need not worry at all. Let me also educate you a little on the causes for fungal infections; yeast/fungus thrives in moist conditions and so you need to avoid all the following:

+After sexual or oral intercourse, or even masturbation make sure you clean and dry off the genitalia well enough and not leave it wet for a long duration of time. Most individuals go to sleep soon after oral or penetrative intercourse leaving the region wet for a long time, thus resulting in yeast infections

+Make sure you dry off well enough after a shower

+If it is hot where you are, make sure you carry an extra change of inner wear, so you can change and prevent the old one from absorbing too much sweat, thus resulting in growth of yeast/fungus

+Take a shower at least once daily

These are some of the most effective preventive measures, and I am more than sure they shall suffice to prevent future occurrences; share this with your husband as well. :)

Candidiasis usually requires about 10-14 days to completely clear up, provided you follow all of the above listed preventive measures religiously.

No, if it were herpes the rash would have not even responded to clotrimazole and possibly have even worsened.

If the symptoms go away with the treatment, then there is no need for a follow-up, but if you wish to do so, then you can. :)

You are most welcome to ask me any questions, at anytime, I am always here to help. I forgot to mention, please also avoid all forms of sexual contact until at least 2 weeks after the last dose of the prescribed medications. Actually, I will let you know when you can involve in sexual contact once you update me on your progress and condition (based only on that). I say this because sexual intercourse can aggravate the condition and take us back to day 1 of treatment (losing all progress)

And in the future, if there is anything worrying you, then write to me and/or send me an image of the presentation and I shall always be right there to help you. Avoid taking too much out of the internet as it can only get you all worked up. I am here to clear whatever doubts you have, no matter what the topic. :)

Best wishes ma'am. :)

Thank you very much,
What would the fissures be from? They are not painful just kind of an annoying reminder

Brief Answer:
Could be from abnormal bowel movements ma'am

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

The fissures in your case could be due to any of the following:

+Abnormal bowel movements
+Large or hard stool
+Less fiber in diet
+Constipation
+Straining too much while passing stools
+Anal intercourse
+Chronic diarrhoea
+Colon condition (e.g. irritable bowel syndrome, etc.)

Can you relate to any one of these? Also, the fissures need to be confirmed by a doctor, so please do so when you visit your doctor :)

Best wishes.

No not really, I mean I've had some of those things but not recently related to this issue. It feel like a paper cut, the skin looks very dry down there. If it were herpes wouldnt I have lesions and blisters?

Brief Answer:
Still don't think this is herpes ma'am, don't worry :)

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

Yes, if it were herpes you would have lesions and blisters and numerous other symptoms, out of which fissures would be one of the least common or one of the last few symptoms.

Do not worry too much about it and apply a petroleum jelly in the region. When you visit your doctor, a physical examination along with a few other investigations can help find the cause and also treat it. But for now, I still do not think it can be because of herpes as there is absolutely no substantially supportive indication for it.

Hope this helps ma'am :)

Best wishes.
