What Causes Chills, Weakness, Itching And Body Pain After Taking Sulfatrim?
I was diagnosed with prostatitis so my doctor put me on a 1 month course of sulfatrim. Two weeks into the antibiotic I got fever and chills and my throat started hurting. My doctor said I had probably contracted a throat infection and told me to stop sulfatrim and to continue with 2 weeks of cipro as this will take care of my throat infection and prostatitis together. I took cipro and two days later the fever went away. I continued the full 2 weeks. My prostatitis hadn't gone away though so my doctor told me to take the two more weeks worth of sulfatrim that I still had. As soon as I started the sulfatrim again I felt sick. I got chills and itch and body pain and weakness everywhere. I stopped the sulfatrim the next day and my symptoms disappeared the next day. I was surprised to my new reaction to sulfatrim. I had taken it for two weeks prior without any major side effects. I tested myself again a few days later. The moment I took sulfatrim again I had the same symptoms. I told my doctor to prescribe me cipro again to use instead of sulfatrim to continue my treatment of prostatitis.
Could I have developed an allergic reaction to the sulfatrim even after using it fine for the first 2 weeks?
Detailed answer...
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
It is a very normal thing to happen where a person doesn't get any allergic reaction on it's first use but get reactions on subsequent use.
What happens is that on the first exposure of the drug, your immune system of body makes antibodies against the drug.
Antibodies are proteins created by immune system to fight foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses.
In your case foreign invader is drug and as soon as you take the drug again, these antibodies attack the drug and sets off a chain of allergic responses.
Why a person develops allergy towards some particular drug is not exactly known ,but it is being thought that your genetic structure may be responsible for it.
I hope it helps, however you are most welcome to revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
