Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. Yes, this choking feeling is common after general anesthesia due to the following:
a. Dryness in the throat due to being nil my mouth and pre-medication.
b. Irritation of the sensitive linings of the throat and larynx by the ETT (Endo-Tracheal Tube) used during the general anesthesia.
c. Post nasal drip or acid reflux.
2. This may last a day or two. Use a medicated gargle and Mucaine Gel to soothe the throat.
3. Thick secretions and acid reflux released during the anesthesia from the nose , sinuses and stomach may be a cause. Draw the attention of your healthcare providers. They can prescribe anti-reflux , mucolytic medication as well as a mild anti-inflammatory medication.
4. Usually, this is transient and requires no active management.

Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. No, the glands in the neck should not be stiff or sore for more than a few hours.
2. As your doctor to re-examine the throat and neck for signs of congestion or mild infection.
3. However, all these complaints are easily managed by medication.
