Brief Answer:
chronic constipation

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX,
Actually your husband is suffering from chronic constipation. The more the bowel is not emptied the more difficult it becomes to evacuate as the liquid content of the stool is reabsorbed and the stool becomes hard and this hard stuff goes on accumulating in the gut to give all sorts of problems.
It may be difficult to do first evacuation but when this is done your husband should maintain the habit of evacuation regularly. Initially he has to use the stool softeners and peristaltic drugs or even a glycerine enema to have good evacuation followed by good regular fibre, fat and oil free diet with good hydration. If he is a smoker he has to try to reduce it and stop it and take a morning walk after a XXXXXXX warm glass of water. He should immediately respond to natures call by going to toilet when the feeling of evacuation is aroused.
If this practice is followed I am sure your husband will start getting pleasant feeling and slowly he will be off the problems.

his physician is considering putting him in the hospital and doing further test. He has already been in the hospital once for three days and it was unsuccessful.(under another doctors care). What is the percentage of patients with this condition that winds up having surgery? His current doctor has mentioned surgery, but he is also in the process of changing offices and has not contacted my husband about any future plans.

Brief Answer:
Chronic Constipation

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXX,

Thanks for reverting.

It is important to know what exactly your doctor is thinking of doing surgery. There is a condition where part of the intestine is paralysed and is not having peristaltic movements. In this condition surgery may be done. If it is the blockage by the fecoliths then instead of surgery endoscopic manipulation can be done.

Rest you have to continue with the chronic constipation management as already advised.

Truly,
Dr. J. Ticku
