What Causes Clots In Menstrual Bleeding?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question: Hello I have been taking Depo "birth cxontrol" for the last 6 months and never stopped bleeding. Two days ago I was hemorrhaging with about 30 clots. I went to obgyn and he suggested hysterectomy. I took about 6 iron pills 365 mg and the bleeding stopped. This is strange because of what happened two days ago and in the last year of having a period daily. Should I stay on the deepo shot every three months "birth control" with the iron or go to drastic moves of having a hysterectomy? I am very confused on how I stopped bleeding from taking iron , are these directly effected?

Brief Answer:
Myomectomy or hysterectomy

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concerns about bleeding.

Following is my reply

1) Bleeding is due to multiple fibroids that you have mentioned.

2) Going back to depot injections may not help you much.

3)Hysterectomy is an ideal option of you don't wish to retain uterus.

4) You can go for only myomectomy ( fibroid removal) If you don't wish uterus removal.

Let me know if you need anymore help.

Brief Answer:
Coincidental

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

Iron itself cannot stop bleeding.

It appears to be coincidental that iron has lead to stopping of bleeding. Iron on itself cannot stop such bleeding.

Let me know if you need anymore help.

is iron not needed, to have proper clothing?

What blood components affect clotting? Is iron one of them and what are the other hematological structures needed for proper clotting? i.e. cells, vitamins, K, Folic Acid, and or B12?

Brief Answer:
Vitamin K and platelets important

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Iron is important. But it does not help much in clotting.

Blood components like platelets, factor 8 etc are important. Vitamin K is also important.

In your situation 6 days of iron tablets are unlikely to have changed anything significantly.

Here the problem seems to be due to fibroid uterus. Other things like iron won't matter much.

Let me know if you need any more help.
