Question: Hi, I have had black specks in my mucus after a bout of cold and I had blood in the mucus initially and now that has stopped. I have been taking mucus decongestants

I also experience shortness of breath when I climb a flight of stairs. this though I feel is because my nose is blocked. Is this something to be worried about ?

Brief Answer:
These are all due to the respiratory tract infection. Nothing to worry much

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and I can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I assure you not to worry as I will take care all of your medical concerns.

Probabilities:-
The black specks and the blood in mucous were coming from the respiratory tract infection. There is bleeding from blister type eruptions from the wall of the throat and sometimes blood may also come from the respiratory passages or even the lungs. Nothing dangerous and there are aftermaths of the cold which you have recovered a bit from.

Shortness of breath is common in convalescent period after illness due to weakness. When it combines with the stuffiness of nose, aggravates the issues. Other reason may be the low levels of RBCs or the Hemoglobin deficiency (Anemia). You need to go for CBC with ESR and Differentials Blood test to rule out the cause being anemia.

You need to keep taking nasal decongestants and add an antiallergic too like Claritin tablet.

You need not worry as all will be fine soon. Keep a good diet and take Oral rehydration solution like Pedialyte to replenish the fluid and electrolytes and to get revitalized. Take plenty of water, fruits, vegetables and salads. Salmon fish is good for you to get better soon.

Thank you for your answer. I have been on claritin and things have improved much more. Though what used to be black specks now are thick black strands in my mucus. The frequency of discharge has reduced but the black strands continue when there is mucus discharge. Do you think it is something to get checked?

Brief Answer:
It seems to be the clotted blood tinged phlegm coming out in streaks.

Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you to my virtual clinic HCM!

It seems more to be the clotted blood tinged sputum that is coming out in streaks. I is very common issue after getting the respiratory infections.

But, to be on the safe side and to relieve the anxiety and doubts you have it will be a good option to get yourself examined by an Ophthalmologist. He will carry out a general physical examination and will go for a battery of tests on you which may include but not limited to some Basic Blood Work, Sputum for Lab evaluation for culture and sensitivity. After the report of the sputum examination it will be clear if there is any serious issue.
