Posted on Wed, 22 Apr 2015
Question: My 90 year old dad has been slightly dizzy all day and his legs have been hurting him to the point he says he had problems walking down the hall at his office. His blood pressure is reading 141/68 with a pulse of 80. His ankles are swollen as well but it's not atypical for that. What could I be looking at?

Brief Answer:
Look into nutrition, maybe hypoglycemia

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Ankle edema, if present for long time can cause tissue damage and if still persistent can lead to ulceration.
2. Lower limb elevation in lying down position, with 2-3 pillows below legs ( so that the ankle is above heart level) will help in reduction of edema. If necessary, diuretics prescription can be taken for persistent edema.
3. If the pain is not in ankle, then other causes needs to be thought of. Exact location necessary for further opinion regarding leg pain.
4. As his blood pressure is good. Not to worry.
5. Possibly hypoglycemia due to low nutrition leading to dizziness. Hopefully, no fever or bugs. Give him fruit juice and nutritional food.

Hope it helps.
