Question: hello doctor,

my daughter is 3.5 years old and weight is 13.8 kg. From last 5 days, she is having fever. we went to see her doctor 5 days ago. Doctor found nothing else other than fever that ranges between 101 f to 103 f. doctor prescribed suspension ibugesic plus for fever

After 1 day of doctor visit, she started shivering at home, when we called doctor again she recommended ziprax-100 3 ml. we are giving zifi-100 from last 4 days but there is no improvement. still fever comes back after seven hours of giving ibugesic. still fever goes up to 101 to 102.

we will go to doctor again today as yesterday she was not available. but please suggest what can be the problem. is antibiotic is not working?

Brief Answer:
Viral infections may last for a week

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the details and understand your concern. Most often such symptoms are due to viral infections and antibiotics like Zifi-100 are ineffective in such cases. I would have preferred to get the blood tests done before prescribing antibiotics. Please be patient, irrespective of treatment it usually takes 5-7 days to resolve. Give steam inhalation to your child. Water vapor will reach deep inside and would help in diluting the cough and thus would provide relief. You need to give paracetamol or ibugesic plus to bring down the temperature. If they are not effective in bringing down the temperature, you need to use Meftal-P (mefenamic acid) which is more effective but is a prescription medication. Also use tepid sponging. Giving some antiallergic like cetirizine will take care of the runny nose, if present.

If fever lasts for more than 7 days you would need to get the blood tested.

Regards
