Question: I have a girl friend. she is always hungry she claims stomach absorption issues, and she sleeps a lot. she can go to bed at 11 and gets up the following day at noon. also she develops rashes very in patches on her skin, usually on her back and the patches swell up, like a plant sting may do.

are these related symptoms and what could the problem be?

Brief Answer:
IBS/DM/ HELMINTHIASIS

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query to hcm,
These symptoms are more likely to be an irritable bowel syndrome or a possible early diabetes onset with polydipsia, polyphagia and poly uria. She needs to be tested with a blood sugar profile and also a stool culture test to rule out any helminthiasis, because that can explain skin rashes which if are not allergic then can be due to helminthiasis per se which can secondarily cause absorption issues. Please meet with a gastroenterologist for the tests.

Brief Answer:
it can be treated.

Detailed Answer:
It is important to get a stool culture done to look for helminths , if found then a course of anti-helminthic can be taken and this can be treated. Also IBS can be treated with a short course of antibiotics and eating a balanced spice free diet with adequate hydration over the day.
it should not be left untreated.

hi, I have a follow up question. my girlfriend has done nothing yet to get checked
she has been to Thailand and developed a rash, albeit different in appearance to previous rash shown to you. this rash is on her neck. she apparently took some over the counter medicine that brought the rash down, but now it has reappeared. Finally she is showing signs of doing something about it
I attach another picture of this new rash. could it be related to the original rash?

Brief Answer:
appears to be allergic rash

Detailed Answer:
This appears to be a similar rash with bumps , redness, and itching. Its not fungal but seems more of contact dermatitis as it is well localised. Anyhow helminthiasis should be ruled out and an empirical course of anthelminthics can be taken to cover the possibility.
In the meantime she may apply ointment Betnovate Locally Twice A Day For Relief.
