What Causes Constant Loud Ringing Sound In Ears?
Tinnitus.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. The loud ringing sound is known as Tinnitus. Tinnitus is not associated with serious disorders in most cases. Tinnitus has a tremendous nuisance value. Almost all people at some point in their lives experience tinnitus.
2. Get our ears examined to rule out any ear wax which is one of the commonest causes of Tinnitus. Get a Pure Tone Audiogram (PTA) and an Impedance Audiometry (Tympanometry).
3. What is your exposure to occupational noise and loud music / earphones / XXXXXXX phones? Exposure to loud noise is also a leading cause for tinnitus.
4. I your particular case, it is possible that the the tinnitus is drug induced. Discontinue the Allegra D and start plain Allegra. You have also mentioned a history of headache/ migraine and dizziness in a recent query. Get a Neurologist's opinion.
5. Nasal congestion is common and may lead to Tinnitus. Take regular steam inhalation.
6. The exact cause of Tinnitus is unknown. However one of the the agreed pathologies is damage to or loss of to hair cells in the inner ear. The role of the brain in the perception of Tinnitus also exists. For example, some people have been relieved of Tinnitus after a cerebral stroke, while some continue to hear it even after the Cochlear (Hearing) Nerve is cut.
7. There are also types of Tinnitus which occur with normal or Conductive Hearing Loss (CHL). Objective Tinnitus may be heard by others and Pulsatile or Vascular Tinnitus is related to increased or turbulent blood flow. You may get a Neck Vessel Color Doppler done.
8. If your Tinnitus increases on clenching the teeth, it may require dental bite correction. I have noticed patients who have increased Tinnitus when they are stressed, have fluctuations of blood pressure, anaemia, low blood sugar levels and so on.
9. Cochlear Synaptic Tinnitus may be treated in up to 50% people with Caroverine infusion followed by capsules for two months. Other treatments such as transtympanic steroids, gingko biloba, multi-vitamins and anti-oxidants may also help in reducing Tinnitus.
10. Kindly let me know the results of your investigations. This will help in suggesting further treatment. I must emphasize that in a vast majority of patients of tinnitus, the cause is never found. However there are further treatment options depending on the type of tinnitus.
Regards.
Fibromyalgia is unlikely in your case.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. The current set of symptoms described by you do not suggest any possibility of fibromyalgia.
2. Fibromyalgia has very widespread symptoms and is a diagnosis of exclusion ( when a disease pattern of widespread symptoms does not match any existing pattern).
3. An opinion from a General Medicine Specialist, a Neurologist and/or a Psychiatrist is mandatory for diagnosing fibromyalgia.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
Regards.
