Hi
Thank you for asking HCM.
I have gone through your query. Your problem can be due to repetitive stress injury or cervical spondylosis. This can be due to the wrong postures you are having for long time.
When you sit and lean forward your weight of head is increased by gravitational pull and unequally distributed over spine. This can cause injury , osteophyte growth as well as wear and tear on spine joints. So always correct your postures while looking to your computer or XXXXXXX phones or while reading.
You should avoid pillows and use orthopedic pillows. Or you can roll a towel and place on the neck depression while sleeping. Also sleep on hard mattress. Ice pack application or hot fomentations on neck will be helpful. You can also put Gels containing NSAIDs like Diclofenac , methylsalicylate and capsaicin for local application. In case of more pain oral NSAIDs like ibuprofen can be taken also.
If there is no improvement then a consultation with an orthopedician and X ray cervical spine should be done to find out and confirm the cause of this.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
Yes, popping should be avoided.

Welcome again.
Thank you for your follow up.
Popping should be avoided as it can give damage to joints , ligaments or even blood vessels. You don't need to worry as proper exercises , maintaining good postures while sleeping and sitting and physiotherapy like massage will be helpful to normalize this. Neck muscle strengthening exercises like placing hands on each sides and giving force by head on hand is good also.
You can do the measures i mentioned before like ice pack application or hot fomentation and applying anti inflammatory gels. Avoid sleeping by stomach. Sleep on back with a orthopedic pillow on neck and avoiding other pillows.
All these measures will be helpful to normalize your problem. If there is no improvement then consult an orthopedician and have an x ray.
Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
