Posted on Fri, 4 Apr 2014
Question: My baby who is 3 months old did not pass poo for the past twelve days. It started when she is 2 months old and after ten days, we kept baby suppository and she passed poo normally. Now 12 days went by. Her stomach is not tight and she passes flatus normally. Some times, the flatus smells bad otherwise it seems to be fine. Baby is taking only mother's milk - but most of the time we express the milk and feed through bottle. Baby is taking colicarmin (ayurvedic drops by banlab) 10 drops every morning and evening. Is baby not going poo for 12 days normal ? How can we help the baby ?

Brief Answer: There is no cause for concern Detailed Answer: Hi Welcome to Healthcare-Magic Greetings of the day Dear XXXX Being a parent myself I understand your concern and apprehension. Let me assure you there is no cause for concern. Baby not passing stools is a common Pediatric problem. As she is 3 months and is on exclusive breast feedings it's very good indeed. There is no cause of concern if the following criteria are fulfilled 1. No distension of abdomen 2. No features of failure to thrive: Is gaining weight adequately 3. No vomiting 4. Accepting feeds well and sleeps well after feeds 5. There is no redness or ulcer at anal opening also known as fissure in anus 6. Baby is playful. I would suggest you the following which will definitely help as has helped many of my patients. I would also suggest you a routine assessment by Pediatric Surgeon 1. Continue giving exclusive breast feeding till 6 months 2. XXXXXXX Glycerine Pediatric Suppository once a day for next one week will ensure complete evacuation of colon 3. Rule out any fissure in anus. 4. Hot Seitz bath : Add a handful of common table salt to tub of lukewarm water. Baby can be made to sit in it for 10 to 15 minutes. It will be relaxing and stimulate bowel movements. The water should not be too hot.you can immerse your hand and if you can tolerate the warm water for 30 second then it's safe for baby. Remember every child has their own bowel habits. So there is wide variation Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you. Take care Best Regards Dr Deepak Kishore MBBS, MS, MCH Consultant Pediatric Surgeon

Thank you doctor for your detailed input. It really helps. Are you specific about 'Helen Glycerine Pediatric Suppository' because in most of the stores here in Bangalore, we don't have the suppositories. What we gave already is from ACME pharma. Will this be fine ?
