What Causes Constipation While On Xarelto?
Question: I have been constipated since I started taking Xeralto about 10 days ago. I have had about 4 bowel movements after taking prune juice and now metamucil.
Just today I had a bowel movement and after wiping, stood up and realized I had a strange stool, about 8 or 10 inches long still hanging from my anus. I removed it with toilet tissue. Is this a concern?

I am Dr.Muhammad Ahmad. I have read your question completely and willl try to help with your concern.
Xeralto does cause constipation in about 3% of patient, specially when the drug has newly been started. With time patient's gut starts to get adjusted and things start to settle down.
The scenaria which you mentioned in here seems to be exactly the same, the type of stool which you did mention here is not a concern in my opinion. Here are a few suggestions which will help you through without using much of medication.
1) Taking good quantity is fibre is the most important strategy to cure constipation I would suggest you to take fibre through fruits...multi grain bread, organic fibre supplements etc.
2) Avoid fatty food.
3) Keep taking good quantity of fluids.
4) Vegetables help too.
5) Increased proportion of meat in food with less fruits and vegetables aggravates constipation.
Here are a few things which are red signs in xeralto usage.
1) Bleeding from any part of body.
2) Tar like black sticky stools.
3) Bruises on the body.
4) Rashes on body.
In these cases you have to immediately contact your doctor.
