Brief Answer:
may be connected, physical illness can delay periods

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Delayed period can be due to different possible causes, one of these is physical illness or stress.
If the diarrhea has been going on for the months that you have not had a period then it is possible that it is causing the period delay because it would be stressing out your body.

Other causes of delayed period are: (1) abnormal levels of thyroid hormone
(2) emotional illness or stress
(3)high levels the hormone prolactin
(4)PCOS- polycystic ovarian syndrome
(5)excess physical activity

In terms of the persistent diarrhea, this should be assessed by your doctor. Diarrhea that lasts for more than 4 weeks is called chronic diarrhea.

There are different possible causes such as: (1) IBS
(2)infection
(3)Crohns or ulcerative colitis
(4)side effect of medication
(5)thyroid disease- high hormone levels
(6)related to foods used

Your doctor would need to examine your abdomen, send a stool sample to the lab and may also suggest imaging of the abdomen by ultrasound or CT.

Treatment would depend on the cause found.

I hope this helps , feel free to ask any other questions

Thanks for your help Dr.
I eat a lot of fruit & vegies & 'ruffage' foods...can this cause loose stools? That's what I've been told!? I've been told too much roughage can irritate the bowel..

Brief Answer:
too much can cause problems

Detailed Answer:
HI

Sorry about the late reply

The fruits and vegetables should cause regular bowel movements , normally a person should use at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day, this means with each main meal and possibly as snacks.

If you are using this amount then this is fine. If you are using more than this then it may be causing a problem.

Please feel free to ask any other questions
