What Causes Continuous Weight Gain In-spite Of Dieting And Exercising?

Question: My granddaughter is 16 years old. She started doing crossfit because her father does it. Then she progressed on to weightlifting. She goes to the gym every morning at 5:30 and does crossfit. Then after school she goes back and weightlifts another tree hours. She continues to gain weight even though she is just about starving herself. It is not muscle unfortunately. Her trainer is even concerned. Do you have anyideas why her body would be doing this? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
The energy intake has to be greater than energy output for weight gain

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

For weight gain to occur, the total amount of energy intake (as food) has to be greater than the total amount of energy output. There seems be no doubts that the energy output is reasonable. So, I guess the energy density of the food that she takes in is good enough.

However, in such a situation, the thyroid profile needs to be checked. In case of low thyroid hormone levels, weight gain is likely to occur. Another simple test to do would be to check the fat density of her body. This can be checked at many gyms or slimming centres. If that is fine, you need not worry.

About her regular diet, I would suggest small but frequent meals. It would be better if the carbohydrate portion (comes from cereals) is replaced reasonably with protein rich items like meat, eggs and fish. Proteins need to be consumed in bulk in order to maintain the body in case of such workouts.

Hope that helps.
