What Causes Cough And Hiccups After Swallowing Food?

Question: The recent problem is that, whlile my father is swallowing anything (liquid food/tablet/water), he is couging a lot as well as hiccup. His speech is not clear, it's very difficult to understand. He is giving stress while saying something. What should we do ?

Your father has suffered from stroke. Stroke may cause difficulty in swallowing leading to aspiration. Aspiration of food causes cough.

Video fluoroscopy test may be done to assess his swallowing. An upper GI endoscopy may also be done to see if there is any mechanical obstruction in the food pipe or any communication between the food pipe and the respiratory tract.
