What Causes Cough And Nasal Congestion?
Question: Hello Doctor, I have a problem from last few year.. rather it feels like inherited. Whenever I wake up in the morning, I have lot of cough and also one side of nose is blocked. And I feel heavy head at one side.
Brief Answer:
It may be asthma or allergy
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
From your query it seems that any side of nose may be blocked. Heaviness of head can be due to blocked nose. Does it happen in certain position?
Is the cough associated with mucous production or fever?
What relieves the cough? What makes it worse?
Are there any other associated symptoms like difficulty in breathing?
Meanwhile to avoid any infection you can follow healthy lifestyle like drinking cleaner water and hygienic food. Regular exercise also helps.
Kindly answer the questions so that I am better able to help.

Hello Dr. Vaishalee
Thanks for your reply. Here are my inputs to your further queries:
- Usually it depends in which position I am sleeping, so the same side is blocked.
- Yes it is associated with a lot of mucous.
- in my earlier message by cough I mean is that I have to spitout a lot of mucus.
- It is bit relieved if I only drink green tea in the day & it worsens incase I had some cold milk before sleeping.
- No major difficulty in breathing but if nose if blocked one side than it is not comfortable.
Please let me know for any further query.
Best regards
xxxxxx

Brief Answer:
It seems like chronic bronchitis
Detailed Answer:
Hi again
Thanks for your detailed response.
From your followup it seems like chronic bronchitis. Chronic bronchitis is sometimes inherited. We can confirm it with examination by ENT and pulmonologist doctor. They can do some tests like chest X-ray, spirometry, sputum microscopy etc to confirm the diagnosis.
In chronic bronchitis we need to avoid the factors that make it worse like cold air, cold food, smoke, etc.
In your case it seems to be mild. If there are exacerbations, watch out for difficulty in breathing. During exacerbations intensive treatment maybe required including antibiotics, inhalers, oxygen etc.
Hope it helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
