What Causes Cough And Shortness Of Breath After Taking IC Irbesartan HCTZ?

Question: i have a question about blood pressure medicine. I was taking methydopa 500 mg for 7 years. It wasn't controlling my blood pressure as well as it should, so i was put on IC Irbesartan HCTZ 30 days ago. We bought a dog in January and have had 6 month no allergies. Now since this medication i cough a lot, shortness of breath and have trouble breathing. Have never had any allergies before except to an old cat but was able to live with her. So yesterday i decided to leave my dog environment and this morning i felt great, but then i took this new med again and got into the car air condition bothered my breathing. Could it be this medication because I feel awesome before I take it everyday? I was thinking of going back on Methydopa until I am able to see my doctor next week. Also should the allergic sensitivity go away if I stop or does it remain?

Brief Answer:
yes, stop the Irbesartan & take methyl dopa till you see your doctor.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for the query through Healthcare magic.I have read it & understand your concern.
It seems you have an allergic tendency( the symptoms you had with a cat suggest it ) & allergies to different things are possible in a susceptible person.
You were symptom free when dog was removed from the environment , but taking the medicine IC Irbesartan HCTZ , precipitated the breathlessness' also you seem to be symptom free before taking the pill..All these symptoms suggest allergy to ingredients of the medicine. IC Irbesartan is known to produce allergic reaction including breathlessness.
* In this context it's advisable to stop the drug & start with the drug you are used to ( Methyl dopa 500) temporarily & get in touch with your doctor as soon as possible for change of blood pressure medicine that suits you ,for a better control of blood pressure
* If you are allergic to the ingredients of the drug.. the symptoms should regress within a couple of days ( that confirms the allergy ).
* So I am happy to support your idea of withdrawing the medicine( to get rid of allergy ), resuming the older drug to avoid BP shoot .. till you see your doctor
I hope that has helped you. Any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks.
