What Causes Dark Brown And Clumpy Menstruation?

Question: for the last two months my period has been dark brown and clumpy. it isn't heavy buy lasts 5 days. usually it is heavy and red. why could this be happening?
Brief Answer:
It can be a normal physiological variation.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing to us about it.
I can understand your concern.
With your history, I understand that your period is regular and you are not using oral contraceptive pills, so this variation in your period may be a normal physiological variation.
Brown color means old blood (deoxygenated blood) and clumpy means because of heavy period your anticoagulants are not capable to prevent clot formation.
If the problem persist for 3-4 cycle then you should consult a gynecologist and get yourself examined, because if you passed more clot in menses then you may become anemic.
Hope it is useful, feel free to ask more.
Good luck.

I am on the pill and have been for years
Brief Answer:
It can be a side effect of pill.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Nice to hear from you once again.
Are you on contraceptive pills? If yes, this can be a side effect of oral contraceptive pill. Few pills may cause discoloration of period bleeding. In such cases, I recommend healthy - balanced diet, some regular exercise and stress relieving measures before making changes with your treatment. I have seen patients improve in few cycles with dietary and exercise changes.
Hope it is clear now.
