What Causes Dark Color Patches At Mole Removal Area?

Question: I had a suspicious mole removed about 10 weeks ago. It was a complete excision, not a shave. The pathology results came back as completely normal. It has now developed a dark coloured (linear but irregular) patch in the centre, not dissimilar to the darker part that was in the centre of the mole. My GP seems quite concerned and has referred me to a dermatologist but I have to wait weeks for an appointment and am worried that the pathology results may have been incorrect or mixed up and that it is melanoma and has resurfaced. I have read about recurred Nevus but they seem to be after an incomplete removal like after a shave biopsy only. As I understand it may be relevant, I have white skin although I am a fairly dark skinned individual.

Welcome again and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I do remember regarding your concern for mole in XXXXXXX a few months back. It is good that you got the mole excuses and got the biopsy done for the same.

As per the old description of the mole as well as according to the biopsy report I can make out that the mole area most be completely normal. Even then to confirm it best I humbly request you to kindly upload few good resolution pictures of the affected area focusing the area of concern.

For the same you have a feature on the right side of the page.

Welcome again to the forum and thanks a lot for sending the pictures.

I have analyzed all the pictures sent by you. After analyzing the pictures with diligence let me reassure you fully that the area of concern is not at all related to melanoma or any other cancerous or related growth.

The area in the center is dark colored with red surroundings. It is not unusual to find such kind of appearance in complete excision of mole. Whenever the healing is delayed teh area can remain darkened and therefore appears in the same condition as you have. Your biopsy is conclusive that the mole was normal and there cannot be any chance of melanoma in the same. I had personally seen that mole area before the excision and accordingly guided you.

Do let me know if you have any pain or discomfort in the area.

Hello young lady,

I am extremely happy to know that you are relaxed to know the details.

If there is no pain or soreness then there is nothing to be worried about it. Many a times such appearance is also seen in case if the area is bit infected. But most usually in cases of deep excsion there can be chances of delayed healing giving dark colored appearance of the scarred area. This is common in healing by secondary intension where the central screed area is always darker. So do not worry about the area. If at all I suggest then can apply a combination cream of mild steroid with antibiotic such as Fluticasone with Mupirocin for few days period.

I completely reassure you that the area is normal as per my experience.
