What Causes Dark Green Breast Discharge?
Infection, breast tumor or cancer, and prolactinom
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,
Breast discharge, especially out of pregnancy and at the age of 50 deserves a very careful and keen attention.
The commonest causes of this discharge would be either an infection (breast abscess), breast cancer or a particular type of breast tumor called a prolactinoma.
Its almost certain that at 50 you should be in menopause and you are not pregnant.
It is important to note if there is any family history of breast cancer or not. also, any enlarged lymph nodes around the armpit or breast nodules would be very suggestive of breast cancer. A mammographic exam would be important.
Any notion of fever or serious warmth and pain would be suggestive of an infection or an abscess. A complete blood count and a needle aspiration of any swollen area shall be sufficient.
Any history of headache and visual disorders are important to be noted. These coupled with a breast discharge could be suggestive of a special brain tumor called a prolactinoma. This tumor secretes prolactin responsible for milk secretion. If present, a brain Ct scan could be helpful.
I suggest you get a proper review from your gynecologist first. Kind regards,
Dr Bain
