Question: This is regarding my husband. He seems to feel sometimes as though he gets food stuck on the way to his stomach. He just found out he's anemic...is negative for H pylori...is having an endoscopy Friday...what do you think?

Brief Answer:
It may be due to Spasm/Paralysis of the muscles of esophagus.

Detailed Answer:
Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you to my virtual clinic HCM!
I have carefully worked through your case, and can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns.

Situations like this usually appear due to the spasm of the muscles of the esophagus (the food pipe). This leads to defective swallowing process and Peristaltic movements. These peristaltic movements get originated in the start of esophagus with a push to the bolus of food by the base of tongue and pharynx.

Muscles of esophagus gets weak due to neurological defects or some corrosive action and continuous irritation of the esophageal wall. This acid comes from stomach if the lower esophageal valve is incompetent.

What happens is, when food reaches the defective portion of the passage of food in Digestive system, it gets stuck there and is a very uncomfortable situation.

It may also be due to enlarged Thyroid gland. You should consult his physician to rule it out.

In endoscopy where they are going to see all above reasons, they will also find out other important reason of the same issue and that is the lower esophageal valve doesn't open properly to give way to the oncoming bolus en rout to stomach.

Management:
Balloon dilatation on endoscopy.
Heller's myotomy surgical procedure.

Have a wonderful time ahead. Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have any further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you in no time. If satisfied here, please give a generous five star rating and don't forget to close the discussion.
For any disease you have, a timely follow-up after sometime regarding the treatment efficacy and to see any need to change the treatment options is very necessary. Keep a follow up some days after this visit session ends.
