What Causes Delayed Menstruation?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Feb 2017
Question: I came off the pill about 6 months a go after a year and a half. When i was on the pill my period got very light. When i stopped, it came back as normal straight away for 3 months. After that it became lighter and shorter. This month I am now 6 days late. My cycle has been 28-29 days. I am not pregnant. I am worried because I had chemotherapy 10 years a go and have read about early menopause. I haven't seen a doctor yet.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Delayed periods can be due to pregnancy, stress or hormonal imbalance like hypothyroidism, hyperprolactinemia or polycystic ovarian syndrome.
If pregnancy is ruled out, then you should get your thyroid hormone, prolactin hormone levels and ultrasound tested to confirm the diagnosis.
If these are negative, the the FSH levels should be tested to see whether you are going in premature ovarian failure.
High FSH values are suggestive of ovarian failure.
