What Causes Delayed Periods After Unprotected Non Penetrative Sex?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Jul 2014
Question: I started my last period on the 1st of XXXXXXX It's now the 3rd of July and I've not had a period. I've not had intercourse for a while as I came off the pill about 4 months ago. However, my partner and I were intimate just over 2 weeks ago and there was slight contact between our genitals. I did a pregnancy test today which came back negative. Could I be pregnant? I also had tonsillitis about 3 weeks ago and was thinking this had maybe had an affect? I don't want to be pregnant right now

Brief Answer:
test likely accurate,

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Pregnancy tests can detect pregnancy by day 11 to 14 after likely conception. If you had conceived then the test would have shown it by this time if the test was done in this time frame.

In the absence of ejaculate coming into contact with the ovum (eggs) then conception is not likely to occur so the chance that you had conceived due to the contact with your partner would be low.

Your period is delayed by a few days and it is understandable to be concerned but it is possible for a menstrual cycle to be off by a few days.

Significant delays in the period can occur due to: (1) physical illness
(2)emotional stress or illness
(3)high levels of a hormone called prolactin
(4)abnormal levels of the thyroid hormone
(5)extreme physical activity (eg athletes)
(6)inadequate diet
(7)polycystic ovarian syndrome

You may want to consider waiting up to see when your period occurs. If it delayed beyond a week and the test was accurately negative, your doctor may consider assessing you to determine the cause.
In many persons, the next cycle is observed to see if it is also abnormal before proceeding with any investigations but if you prefer, your doctor would be able to assess you at this stage.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
