What Causes Delayed Periods?

default
Posted on Sat, 12 Jul 2014
Question: Hi, recently I have not received my period in over a month. I am not sexually active and I have been very worried and stressed that my delay is due to pregnancy even though I have never had sexual intercourse. 06/11/14 was the last day when I received my period and it was only for a day but it was like a normal heavy flow. Since then I do get cramping almost everyday that lingers and sometimes trails down to my leg. In march I had made a big diet change and stopped eating red meats and eliminated lots of foods from my diet. I have lot some weight and have gotten thinner. Any insight would help. I am 18, 5'5", and 112 pounds

Brief Answer:
FOLLOW THE ADVICE.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

1) If you are NOT sexually active or involved in sexual intercourse, then there is NO chance of pregnancy.

2) Hormonal imbalance, mental stress, emotional upset, pelvic infection, irregular diet pattern, over weight, Poly Cystic Ovary, thyroid disturbance, high prolactin level etc can cause late period in this context.

Here, I suggest to undergo one pelvic ultrasound scan and complete hormone tests (Serum progesterone, Thyroid profile, LH/ FSH, Serum prolactin etc) under the guidance of local GYNECOLOGIST. It will help to rule out underlying cause and confirm the diagnosis.

3) You may require cyclic progesterone pill to induce and regularize monthly cycle. Other supportive treatment may be required according to lab test result. Kindly, procure a complete prescription from your doctor.

4) You should take LOW carbohydrate diet, control body weight (great impact on late period), avoid mental stress by meditation or yoga, keep bowel habit regular, drink plenty of water and take sound sleep.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and take care yourself.

Regards,
Dr Soumen
