What Causes Delayed Speech In A 2 Year Old Infant?
Question: My son is not speaking well, he is 2.7 years old we are located in different country. he used to go playschool where English is taught. In home he used to communicate only with my wife in different language. Now he started say only few words and letters. But he understands very clearly what we say and follow our commands properly. But we are worried, at his age the other children’s are speaking very well.

Delayed speech in children is mainly due to inadequate teeth, tongue tie, no other child in family, delayed milestones.
At 2.7 year of age, around 20 teeth are present, child have difficulty in speaking words. So, first thing is that you have to check for the number of teeth. If teeth are less than vitamin d needs to be given.
Tongue tie can also result in delayed speech, an examination by a surgery specialist should be done. If required then a minor operation needs to be done.
Families who have single child, also leads to delayed speech. In this case, you should take the child to gathering of same age children.
If other milestones are delayed, then it could be a case of mental retardation. But, as you have said that child is understanding all the things, this is definitely not the case.
I advise you to speak to child as much as possible as this is necessary for increasing speech in child.
