default
Posted on Tue, 30 Dec 2014
Question: My XXXXXXX is 14 months old and he doesn't say one word not mama or daddy. I went to my pediatrician and she said I have to get in front of his face and slowly say mama so he can understand. The problem is he is always into something I cannot get his attention. I can't get him to look at me long enough. I always say come to mama but he doesn't pay attention. Do you think he will get it if I just keep saying it e end though he is not looking at me? I am worried that I will not get him to talk.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day
Dear Ms XXXXXXX

Being a parent myself I understand your concern and apprehension.

If the baby is responding to voice and vocalizes then there is no cause for concern. Every baby is unique and have their own development milestones including speech and language. Many babies take their own time in using the phrases mummy or daddy. Sometimes they just use monosyllabic word like ma or da. Continue your efforts , your child should soon able to say the words.
I hope his other milestones are within normal limits.

Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you.

Thank you for your response, so even if he is not paying attention to me when I say come to mama he will eventually get it if he hears it enough, or does he have to concentrate on my face when I say it?

Brief Answer:
He should start speaking soon

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms

Do not worry. Children pick up the words and will exactly say it even if they don't look at mother. Seeing lip movement is not important as hearing the words. It would be harsh to build up any rules for kids. I hope he responds to sound and also vocalizes.
Do not be he should start speaking soon.

Take care

Best regards
Dr Deepak
