What Causes Diarrhea Immediately After Eating?

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Feb 2015
Question: Hello, I am a 32 yr old female with hx of low functioning gallbladder for many years causing pain. also hx of high cholesterol since a teen regardless of diet, not over weight. I also had hx of IBS from teen needing to run to bath room depending on what I ate or just sometimes from where (a salad out could make me sick). With a natural diet, minimal gluten and low fat the Ibs has been under control for some time.
The gallbladder never got better nor cholesterol, they only got worse. after 11 days of pain I needed emergency removal on 12/20.
since the removal my ibs systems seem to have come back. I eat and I have diarrhea right away 1 to 3 times after eating. Seems common after gallbladder removal and I understand the flow of digestive juices changes after removal, but I don't know how I'm going to go back to work lie this and I'm losing weight hardly eating and/ or going to bathroom so much.
The diarrhea or loose stool is very yellow and even orange looking jellow like pieces, floating. sometimes it's just yellow mucous.
My question is given this information what am i lacking or not absorbing? I have read this means you do not have enough Bile Salts? and also read it can be caused from too much acidity from bile going into intestines. I would like too take a natural supplementation to help like bitters to stimulate bile salts nut don't want to make my situation worse by causing more irritation if I do the wrong thing.
Any suggestions to what is coming it of me and how to fix or help the process?

Brief Answer:
Complication of gallbladder removal

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation you are in.

From what you are describing, it seems that your symptoms are due to cholecystectomy :
- biliary acid is excreted directly to the large bowels associated with diarrhea
- the bile is responsible for the digestion of fats. So, malabsorption of fat is another possible cause.

A diet regimen is highly recommended :
- no alcohol, no caffeinated drinks
- eat often and small portions
- avoid fatty foods
- eat more foods high in fiber
If I were your treating doctor I would recommend you to use cholestyramine(decrease the laxative effect of bile) and loperamid (slows down intestinal movements).
Please talk with your physician to start the treatment.

All the best!

I just remembered, I started having severe nausea over a week ago and the MD has me taking omeprozole for possible gastritis. I don't recall feeling this bad the even after first having surgery, but since starting that it seems to be out of control. Maybe it's a side effect from that as well? I eat very low fat in general, and right after surgery continued that as well. I really don't think I felt this bad till I started taking that.

Brief Answer:
Not related to omeprazole

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

In rare cases, omeprazole can cause severe diarrhea. However, in your case, I do not think it is related to omeprazole.

It is side effect of surgery. It is a temporary situation that will last for few weeks until it will be settled.

All the best!
