What Causes Diarrhea In 3 Months Old Infant?

Question: Hello. My son is going to be three months old in a weeks time. He has been suffering from loose motions since past six days. Got his stool test done and there is no trace of any infection. Still to rule out any possibility, doctor has prescribed an antibiotic coligyl for him. I am giving him entrogemina two ampules twice a day. Zinc syrup twice a day. And coligyl 2.5ml thrice a day. His weight is 5.2 kgs. His stool is green in colour. And I'm also giving him ors syrup n boiled water in between to avoid dehydration

Loose motions in 3 months old infant takes time to stop.Normally 10-15 days.Don't panic if they are 7-8 times a day/with good urine output/good activity/no fever/and if he is only on breastfeeding.No ORS please.Rest of the medicines are OK.Most of the times they are physiological and sometimes due to viral infection

Hello doctor. Thanks for ur reply. Actually it is more than 7 to 8 times. Yesterday it was around 15 times in 24hrs. Just tht it is in small quantities and watery too. Didnt understand why it is green in colour too. And today is the 6th day to b approx. Thr isnt any fever.. activity is fine. And urine outfut is also sufficient. Pls help

Don't worry. It will stop.since urine output is fine and activity is good no need to worry. Whenever stool frequency increases, unabsorbed bile from small intestine comes in stool.Because of bile stool appears green.keep reacessing hydration from your doctor.Treatment received by him is correct

Hello dr.. my 3 month old baby still is suffering from loose motions.. yest in the entire day he had 8 to 9 times.. I got his stool culture done and in tht it showed growth of e coli.. my doctor here says e coli is very common n is even present in someone who doesnt have an infection. But im confused whether I should give him another dose of antibiotics fr it. And if I shouldnt give him ors then what should I give to avoid dehydration. Today is the 12th day to b approx..and still he isnt cured. My dr here says to give entrogemina twice a day and Z&D zinc one a day. Pls help. Really distressed.

I can understand your concern. But what your doctor is saying is 100% perfect.Loose motion in infants are totally different from adults.Sometimes infection gets cured but motions continue for 1 month too.By giving proper feeding you can avoid dehydration

Thnk u dr fr understanding. I wanted to ask tht my dr here has prescribed septran fr the e coli infection. But as I have already given him a course of coligyl antibiotic fr three days.. shud I also give him septran? Wont it b too much of medicinal intake for such a small baby ? And what abt entrogemina and zinc powder.. such I continue with it or nt. If I cnt him ors then cn I give him boiled water in btw. One or two spoon. Please help.

Continue enterogermina and zinc.Don't give boiled water.No ors as well.Septran should be used with great caution in infants below 6 months.
