Dear Sir,

My mom XXXXXXX Sahiwala got admmitted to the hospital for the Lung Infections and she was put on the Inj
Augmentin and Inj EFFCORLIN 100 mgms. for 3 days.

She got cured and discharged from the Hospital she has Ulcerative colatis last 6 years and now from the
hospital she got the side effects and passing thin motions daily for five to six times and as she is 73
years old so she cant hold the motion and was unable to go toilet and in between she was passing her thin
stools causing her to spoil her clothes and bed sheets too. So she wears internal diapers

After some days I increased her dose of Wysolone up to 55 mg but now her number of motions got reduced,
but in the morning AGAIN SHE CAN'T HOLD the motion she is getting tired and arthritis problems sweeling
of eyes has happened.

I worried about her I dont know what to do whether to continue with high wysolene or to stop.

Please advice.

Brief Answer:
Reduce the dose of Wysolone and start prebiotics.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Greetings from Dr.Divakara.P
Thanks for posting your query.

See, her loose motions could be due to flare up of Ulcerative colitis or it could be due to the side effect of the antibiotic used ( Augmentin ) .

Augmentin is known to cause loose motions even in normal persons. So your mother being a patient of ulcerative colitis can surely develop side effect of Augmentin and have loose motions .

Instead of increasing the dose of Wysolone ( which decreases the immunity of the body) I would recommend you to give her medications called Probiotics ( for example Sporolac ) for 1 week . This shall reduce or even stop her motions.

If inspite of this loose motions persists she need to get a test called Stool Culture sensitivity and Stool for Clostridium Difficile tests to check if any persisting infection is there or not.

I would recommend you to taper the dose of Wysolone to 50mg and slowly taper it back to her previous dose over a period of 2-3 weeks .

Swelling of eyes could be due to overdose of Wysolone or it could be due to Kidney problem ( loose motions can lead to dehydration which in turn leads to Kidney problems ) . If even after tapering dose of Wysolone , eye swelling doesn't come down then get a test called Serum Creatinine and revert back with report.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .

Thanks very much...Now she is Ok now she is passing thick stools but more in the morning which caused pain in belly, Yes I will decrease the dosage of wysolene slowly and tell me if i switch to sporolac for one week, I dont know whether her immune system will accept or not since she is used to wysolene for a long time.

Anyways, Thanks very much Doctor.my existing doctor is telling me to do sigmoidoscopy which causes me Rs 5000 so guide me whether she should undergo for sigmoidoscopy or not???

Brief Answer:
No need of Sigmoidoscopy as of now.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Sporolac can be given once a day for a week or 2 . Don't worry it won't cause any problem to her .

You can wait for the sigmoidoscopy, first try out my advise ( Sporolac + tapering of Wysolone ), if there is no improvement in her condition then get Stool Culture sensitivity and Stool for Clostridium Difficile tests and revert back to me .

Hope this information was useful to you.

Dear Doctor..

My Mom is very nice and energetic and running of the stools also got decreased today she did 3 since from morning and the run up is also little fast now she rush to the toilet and doing it prior to that she was passing in mid way with spoiling her clothes.

Now she has to rush but not doing in mid way.

Medications today took by her

Mesacol OD 3
Wysolene 50
Calcium , Vitamins BP Tablets
and one probiotics table Capscule Velgut

yersterday I had gone to Gastro AS A FREE OPD there Dr suggested me to increase the dosage of Mesacol OD from 3 to 4 and gave me probiotic Vegat to take once in a day.and also taper of Wysolene too.

My mom is energetic and she consumes more food than before.Which causes her to pass motions.

Doctor, Before also she was just passing at the most 4 to 5 motions in a day but the problem, she was not controlling and were used to wear diapers. So for this reason i increased the doasage of wysolene.

She is in the normal stage I myself goes 3 to 4 times a day.The problem with her is has has to wear diapers
