What Causes Diarrhea With Fever While Suffering From Acute Gastroenteritis?

Question: My wife suffered fron high fever 100-103F for 2 days accompanied by acute gastoentritus and backache and shivering. Blood tests was negative for dengue and malaria but showed bad bacterial infection. The Dr perhaps misdiagnosed or assumed it could be pneumonia initial stage but she had no congestion or wheeze though she is asthmatic for the last 20 years. so he prescribed antibiotics ceftom and claribid, and calpol for fever. The medicine did not agree with her as she got acute stomach spasms and the loose motions got worse. On a second opinion, the other Dr after seeing the blood report and Urione and ESR ( Urine and ESR was normal . TLC high at 16,neutrophilis hogh at 89,lymphocytes low at 06, eusinophilis low at 00, absolute neutrophil count at 15, was of tyher opinion it was acute gastroentritus and gave her GUDCEF 200 and supportive medicine for 3 days.. The patient recovered both from fever and loose motions i but stomach hardness and a bit of discomfort still there and today while walking a bit outside she perspired profusely, the blood pressure was ok. She is eating now moderately. Your opinion please?

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to HCM.
I understand your concern.
Most likely she had an acute gastroenteritis which means infection of intestine causing diarrhea with fever.
I think she has been adequately and rightly treated for same.
It does take some time to recover completely for this infection.
The spell of perspiration could be due to some mild persisting infection which should recover with time.
Some degree of stomach discomfort may stay for few days, usually not to worry.
tell her to eat adequately, drink lots of water, ensure adequate electrolyte intake too by taking extra salt in diet.
May need to be further investigated if fever, pain recurs.
Hope this answers your query.
