What Causes Diarrhea With Intestinal Cramps While On Clindamycin?

Specific treatment of diarrhea/ sufficient hydration & Lactobacilli help.
Detailed Answer:
Hi Retiredmn,
Thanks for asking through Health Care magic. I understand your concern.
It seems you had a severe dental problem witch needed a prolonged course of high antibiotic as Clindamycin HCl.
Clindamycin has known side effect of causing diarrhea. Actually any antibiotic can cause it after prolonged course... because they cause destruction of normal intestinal flora ( Lactobacilli that prevents intestinal infection). So as these friendly bacteria are destroyed, other pathogens supervene & diarrhea sets in.( It can be bacterial/ amoebic) I feel you have the same.
Such cases can be controlled with -
- Detecting exact causative organism.. by physical examination by a family physician/ microscopic examination of stools/ culture of stools... as per need
- Anti diarrheal treatment with specific drugs ( antibiotics/anti amebics/ anti spasmodic drugs .
-Lactobacilli supplements, Vitamin B complex supplementation/ injections helps in building up of fresh healthy intestinal flora... helping in process of healing the infection & improve appetite too.
- Ample of water/ liquid diet with sugar & salt or ORT-- to prevent dehydration. In severe cases IV fluids may be needed
- Light to digest food taken in small multiple servings & rest are needful
- Avoid spicy food, fast food.Overeating or fasting.
The diarrhea would be controlled with specific treatment with doctor's help.. but normalization of general condition would take about 10- 15 days with light nutritive diet/lactobacilli supplements/ B complex supplements & digestive enzymes supplements if doctor feels it to be needful along with avoiding physical or psychological stress
I hope you found the answer to be informative & useful. Any follow up query is welcome.
