What Causes Diarrhea With Severe Joint Pain?
Question: Well I have had diarrhea recently but last night I woke up with severe joint pain. I have had this problem in the past but not for many years. I have no other symptoms, I.e. Vomiting, fever. I am a nurse so I will use the proper terminology as it is easier if you don't mind. Recently I have also pulled off at least three ticks from my body. I live in the woods and have two dogs. I do treat them by the way but I won't waste time on that. However I didn't ever have a rash post tick bite. The diarrhea has subsided but the joint pain in awful and I'm abusing ibuprofen at the moment. There is a lot of IBS in my family but I have never been concerned with diagnosis because it doesn't bother me much. Is the joint pain related to the diarrhea? Because the two have happened this way before and it baffles me. Plus I just feel badly.
Brief Answer:
There are two major possibilities.
Detailed Answer:
Dear Madam,
Thank you for posting your query on HCM.
Well, there are two possibilities Lymes disease and reactive arthritis post diarhhoea. Without a rash and without exposure to the woods, I don't place lymes as the first possibility. Since you say there is only pain and no swelling I think it will be prudent to watch out before starting treatment.
Also you said there is history of IBS in your family I would like to know more on this. As if its IBD then I'll put in a third differential - Enteropathic arthritis. Please revert with details .
Take care.
