What Causes Difficulty In Remembering Names, Important Events And Places?

default
Posted on Thu, 9 Jun 2016
Question: Hello. I am 22 years old and have had memory problems for about 4 years now. My day to day (episodic memory) is good but I struggle to remember names and newly acquired vocabulary. I have scored highly on some memory tests like the ravlt(98th percentile) and memtrax but low on the moca (below 26) and rey figure copy (10th percentile). Is it possible that I have mci at my age? This really worries me.

Brief Answer:
MCI very unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thanks for being on HCM.

I have read your question and understand your concerns.

I recall some of your previous discussions too.

Mild cognitive impairment symptoms, besides difficulty of remembering names, include forgetting important events, loosing the thread of conversations, difficulty finding the way around know environments, your family and friends notice these changes, and your judgement is affected in some degree.

Your age also is a factor against MCI.

In conclusion, just struggle of remembering names or new vocabulary, aren't sufficient to be diagnosed with MCI.

I think you shouldn't worry much more than necessary.

Hope you found the answer helpful.

I remain at your disposal for further questions and clarifications.

Greetings.

Is episodic memory the main thing thats effected in alzheimers/mci? Because my episodic memory is good. The reason im worried is that some of the tests suggest my memory is poor (yet some say its good), But the criteria for mci diagnosis is only one poor test (1.5sd below mean). Is this criteria set in stone or is doctor input required?

Brief Answer:
Examining Doctor's opinion matters.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back and thanks for being on follow up.

Alzheimer's, MCI, episodic memory disorders are mainly related to age.

Your age excludes those conditions, so, I don't think that's the case you should be worried about.

Of course, examinating Doctor's opinion pis the mainstream about the correct diagnosis, but tests results should confirm Doctor's diagnosis.

I think you shouldn't worry much more than necessary about these memory issues.

Hope this helps.

Greetings.
