Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: My husband has dark discolor big toenails on each foot. They are very thick. He has been using an ainti fungal cream and now the whole nail is loose. What happens if they fall off? Is ok to let them fall off, is this a normal part of the healing of the fungal? will healthy nails grow back? if they doe fall off should he keep the nail bed covered and if so with what? Should he use a topical antibiotic etc?

Brief Answer:
Nail fungus

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear that your husband has been bothered by nail fungus. The use of topical antifungals don't usually help but it appears that it has. The nail will regrow so there will be regrowth of the nail. While the new nail is growing I would recommend using the antifungal throughout the growth cycle as the fungus may reinfect the nail.

You do not need to cover the nail but I would continue the antifungal as I mentioned earlier. Don't use the antibacterial as some people have allergic reactions to them.

In summary
1. loss of nail normal
2. Nail will regrow normally
3. Apply antifungal during the regrowth
4. No need to cover or use antibiotic ointments
