What Causes Discolouration In Lower Abdomen And Groin After Powerlifting?

Posted on Sat, 10 May 2014
Question: Hi I do quite a bit of powerlifting. 2 weeks ago whilst squatting i felt a tear in my left groin area and a sharp pain and couldn't complete the squat. After a day or so I had a lot ok discolouration in my lower abs running into my groin. Speaking to a friend he said I may have torn my sartorios muscle. There seems to be a small gap at the top of my leg into the groin area. There is also 2 marks on top of my thigh about 2 inches long coming from the groin area. What do you think. ?is it possible to continue squatting.

Brief Answer: It can be a pulled muscle Detailed Answer: Hello XXXX I have read your case and being a sports medicine specialist this type of patients are very common in my OPD. I think it is a pulled muscle. I do not think that it can be sartorius or any other muscle tear. Discolouration is due to accumulation of blood in that region and it will dissolve with in 2 to 3 weeks.I have following suggestions for you. 1. Hot water fomentation by sitting in a tub with gentle warm water 2.Tablet Brufen 3. Diclofenac ointment local application 4.I would not allow you to squat for 2 to 3 more weeks as healing will delayed due to this. 5.For future also always wear a belt in groin when doing weight lifting as it can cause hernia also. Let me know if i forget to mention any thing. I hope you will be fine soon. Thanks and take care.

Thanks for your reply. There is still the gap between my inner thigh and groin area. I also felt a tearing sensation before I dropped the weight which was 190 kg. and there is the two long marks on my upper thigh

Brief Answer: you can get ultrasound Detailed Answer: Hello, If there is any visible gap then it can be hernia. You can just put your hand there and then cough. Do you feel any impulse then. This is a test of hernia. If there is any doubt then you can show it to a surgeon and also get a ultrasound. This will prove if there is any damage inside. I still feel that there should not be any damage though. Let me know if i can help you in any other answer.
