What Causes Dizziness After Open Heart Surgery?
Question: I was a really good dancer for my age, however, in December 2015 I had an open heart surgery / valve replacement / natural valve. Now I get dizzy when I try to dance, i.e. waltz or swing. I tried the Epley Maneuver with the physical therapist but it did not go away. I didn’t try any medications yet. I read there are differences between dizziness, lightheadedness and vertigo. I am also in balance as I was before the surgery (i.e. standing on one leg is difficult for more than 10 sec.)
What shall / can I do? I am a XXXXXXX with limited income (Social Security and some more), however, dancing was my main social activity… I was dancing 3-4 times a week. Contra dance, ballroom dance, swing, folklore, and so much more. What do you suggest shall I do? Medication suggestions, exercises, other activities? I do have a regular doctor but he could not really help me so far.

Brief Answer:
Oral pills of Betavert may help.
Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir
I can certainly understand your concern.
I have worked through your query in detail.
In order to control the dizziness, oral anti motion medications might be required in your case.
I generally prescribe oral pills of Betavert thrice a Day initially for 1 week followed by twice a day for 1 week.
This pill will effectively control the dizziness.
Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe these pills to you.
Post your further questions if any.
Thank you.

Dear XXXXXXX
I do have a follow up question. Here is the URL:
http://www.medicinenet.com/betahistine-oral/article.htm
This medication is no longer available in the United States. See article.
Do you have another suggestion which indicates a product that is allowed in the USA. There is little value to your answer if the Food and Drug Administration – FDA – doesn’t allow the sales of the drug.
Kind regards, XXXX.

Brief Answer:
Meclizine is an alternative
Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir
I can certainly understand your concern.
I have researched a bit on the available drugs in USA that can treat your conditions.
As an alternative, I advise oral pills of Meclizine 25 mg initially once a day PO for 1 week. Based in the response, the dose can be increased if necessary.
This is available as Tab Antivert 25 mg.
Please check with your physician if he shares my view and if can prescribe these pills to you.
Thank you.
