What Causes Dizziness After Taking Namenda?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 May 2014
Question: Namenda has been prescripted by UT Southwestern to treat potential Brain problems, I am 85 years old and very healthy. Mt blood pressure is approximately 122/70 and my cholestrol is 122. I have fallen three times and taken to HEB Hospital (Texas Resources). I am working with Spine Team XXXXXXX to improve by balance.
I am still dizzy. I go back to UT Southwestern on May 27. Is Namenda the problem?

Brief Answer:
Dizziness is a POSSIBLE side effect.

Detailed Answer:
Hello there, Thanks for coming to HealthCareMagic
Memantine (Namenda) is a drug that helps to increase certain chemicals in brain and help with memory and concentration. Now in short YES, it certainly could be causing some dizziness, the drugs own manufacturers admit that much, but I don't want you to suddenly stop the drug, when you head back to Southwestern on the 27th, ask them if they can switch you on to something else that will cause less dizziness. That would be better than suddenly stopping.

The other thing I can ad from my own experiences prescribing this drug is that, lots of patients tend to become 'immune' to the side effects, ie the dizziness fades away after the initial few months of taking the drug. So it might be a good idea to stick with it for awhile longer.

I hope this answers your question, feel free to follow-up about this or whatever else is on your mind. I will do my best to help.
