Detailed Answer:
Greetings. Welcome to HCM and thank you for your question. I am Dr. Meriton. I understand your concern.
Rosuvastatin (Crestor) and other statins are hydroxy-methyl glutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA) inhibitors, an enzyme that is crucial in the cholesterol biosinthesis. This drug and, also, other statins, have their certain more usual side effects, which may become obvious in some time during their usage. Rosuvastatin itself has a highly safe side effect profile, concluded by some studies carried out when this drug was introduced and stressed by later studies. Potential and usual side effects of statins are elevation of liver function enzymes such as AST, ALT and GGT. Very rare, but not impossible, side effects of their usage is myoglobinuria and rhabdomyolisis, two conditions that reflect muscular damage. Now, flu symptoms only last for two to three days, and having flu symptoms three weeks after, raises suspicion in drugs used or in other possible diagnosis. Let us follow the path that the statin is causing this. In this moment, I would recommend you to run some blood tests
- ALT, AST, GGT,
- creatine phoshpo-kinase (CK).
These tests will confirm or exclude any of the above mentioned side effects of the drug. If confirmed, then another alternative for fighting high cholesterol levels should be sought, which you can discuss with your curing physician or cardiologist. If excluded, other diagnoses, rather than the flu, should be sought.
I hope I was helpful with my answer. If you have follow-up questions, I am happy to help. Take care.
Best regards and wish you a good health,
Dr. Meriton
