Question: My granddaughter was given a fentanyl injection in her back. She received 6 injections at the same time. I think she is having a reaction to the drug. I have looked up the side effects of fentanyl an she has plenty of them. We do not know what to do to take the reaction away. We are giving her benedryl tablets and the itch cream for benedryl. She is very itchy, loopy in her head, cannot concentrate on school work. she is very tired a lot of the time. Most of the time. She is very depressed over her condition. she cannot stay awake. she throws up every day. She is very dizzy and unable to walk straight. She needs help washing in he bath tub. She is very weak. She can not do anything alone. She is on prescribed drugs for other conditions. Can you please help me? My e-mail is YYYY@YYYY . Her perscriptions meds are: Abilify, omeprazole, fluoxetine, iron, aleve, zonisamide. trazodone. aviane birth control pills, and somnapure (which is not a prescription). it is supposed to help her to sleep. Multivitiams. She has slept about 6 hours and she is ready to go back to sleep. Thankyou her grandmother. XXXXXX

Brief Answer:
the fentanyl doesn't stay in the system much

Detailed Answer:
cannot say in her particular case without directly seeing her and, several medications cause confusion and sedation (abilify... a powerful anti-psychotic. trazone an anti-depressant used also for sedation, zonisamide--like all anti-epileptic drugs damps down the brain and drugs can also have side effects). Fentanyl injected into the back should be a small amount and when it gets out of the back the total amount shouldn't be high enough to do much. Furthermore, the question implies the mental dullness and other symptoms are chronic and the injections are more episodic. Furthermore, the number of drugs all with indications other than pain imply a lot of other condtions that can and will also interact with the medications and the underlying conditions can also cause mental issues. While fentanyl as a patch often causes confusion, the relation between the drug and any particular side effect is not so easy to establish when the amount of the fentanyl getting to the brain from an injection is likely to be tiny and the other drugs and other issues are quite large.
